Case Studies

Situation:
-
Approximately 600 litres of heating fuel discharged from the holding tank inside the garage adjacent to the home
-
Oil had migrated beneath into the bedrock and made its way into the well which supplied the home
-
Oil was seen coming from the taps of the home
-
Three car garage, all brick, raised bungalow of approximately 4000 sq.ft built on top of limestone bedrock
Task:
Emergency cleanup procedures:
-
Established clean water supply for residence and flushed plumbing system
-
Used existing water well as recovery well and installed Mobile Treatment Unit (MTU) to establish hydraulic containment
Use Chemical Oxidation using Stabilized Hydrogen Peroxide:
-
Used BIM200 to remediate impacted concrete floor
-
Installed screened wells along perimeter of impacted zone
-
Installed injection point at source of impact
-
Installed injection system connecting all wells
-
Used existing water well as recovery well, injected stabilized hydrogen peroxide into screened wells and drew towards recovery well
-
Upon achieving MOE compliance standards, decommissioned former water well and installed new well up stream as water supply
Result
-
Successful remediation achieved in 4 months
-
Saved the home
-
Home owners continued to live in the house during the remediation process

Oil Spill Under Home and Into Lake
Situation:
-
Approximately 756 liters of heating fuel discharged from the holding tank located at the rear of the home
-
Oil had migrated under the home, into an abandoned O-pipe, down to the beach and approximately 150ft. into Lake Superior under the ice.
Task:
Emergency cleanup procedures:
-
Excavated immediate impact area
-
Installed Mobile Treatment Unit to establish hydraulic containment
-
Installed containment booms along lakeshore perimeter
Use Bio-Remediation and Mobile Treatment Unit (MTU) to achieve remediation:
-
Applied BIM200 to foundation of home
-
Used bio-remediation to remediate soil under home
-
Bio-piled contaminated ice and snow. As the contaminated water thawed, run off was captured and pumped through MTU
Result
-
Successful remediation achieved in 12 months
-
Saved the home
-
Home owners continued to live in the house during the remediation process
-
Saved large trees on the property
Huntsville, Ontario
Oil Spill Under Home On Lake
Situation:
-
Approximately 900 liters of heating fuel discharged from the holding tank adjacent to the home
-
Contamination was visible on the basement wall
-
Oil had migrated beneath the concrete basement floor
-
Property consisted of many mature trees. Steep slope toward the lakefront approximately 60 feet from the home.
-
Task:
Emergency cleanup procedures:
-
Excavated and removed contaminated soil down to the footings of the home in impact area
-
Installed a recovery well and Mobile Treatment Unit (MTU) to treat contaminated groundwater
-
Placed containment booms in the lake to prevent further possible migration into the lake
Use Bioremediation and MTU to Remediate Site:
-
Continued use of the MTU for groundwater remediation
-
Removed section of basement concrete floor to gain access to the subfloor contamination
-
Applied microbes and nutrients to degrade the contamination
-
Monitored and maintained microbial remediation until compliance with MOE standards was achieved.
-
Erected a retaining wall to prevent erosion where soil had been excavated, and placed an insulated winterized cover over the exterior impact zone so that bioremediation can continue during the winter months
-
Upon achieving MOE compliance standards, made necessary repairs to basement floor and landscaped exterior impact are
Result
-
Successful remediation achieved in 14 months
-
Saved the home
-
Saved the mature trees and picturesque landscape
-
No disturbance to the lake shore

Pigeon, Nova Scotia
Oil Spill Under Home

Situation:
-
Approximately 600 liters of heating fuel discharged from the holding tank adjacent to the home
-
Contamination visible on the basement wall
-
Oil had migrated beneath the concrete basement floor to opposite side of home
-
Multiple additions and extensive renovations had been done on the house
Task:
Emergency containment and cleanup procedures:
-
Excavated and removed immediate impact area down to the footing of the home
-
Applied BIM200 to outside foundation wall, inside foundation wall, above concrete floor and under concrete floor
-
Placed containment booms in nearby pond and capture dams in ditch as precautionary measures
Use Bio-Augmented Chemical Oxidation to Remediate Soil and Groundwater:
-
Installed gravity feed injection tubes in area of former AST
-
Inject Sodium Persulfate and Calcium Hydroxide oxidative amendment
-
After initial oxidative event culture and inject hydrocarbon digesting microbes
-

Result
-
Successful remediation of both soil and groundwater in 12 months
-
Saved the home
-
Family continued to live in the home during the remediation process
Mt. Pearl, Newfoundland
